Are plastic water bottles a thing of the past? They are according to the makers of the new biodegradable and edible water bottle called Ooho.
The Ooho blob-like water bottle may be the answer we are looking for to take care of the worlds water bottle recycling issues.
This blob may look crazy but when you think of the almost 50 billion plastic water bottles used by Americans each year it starts to make more sense.
Maybe creator Rodrigo García González, and fellow design students Guillaume Couche and Pierre Paslier are heading in the right direction. One where we humans can work with nature and leave less of a negative impact on the environment.
This blob like container holds water in a double membrane. It is said to work like an egg yolk and holds its shape very well for being such a thin membrane. The gel container is made from calcium chloride & brown algae.
This out of the box idea is also very cheep for manufactures. It is said to only cost 2 cents per blob. Which is good news if you need to drink a few of them to quench your thirst.
My biggest question for the designer was ‘Can you make them bigger without having them break?’
Then I realized that once the blob is pierced you cannot reseal it. This makes it a one-serving one-time-use item.
The biggest problem that is argued for eating the Ooho is the ability of the consumer to keep the outside of the blob clean before use. It will need to be stored well and used with clean hands if it is to remain sanitary for consumption.
This kind of thinking could be exactly what we are looking for to help make a positive impact on the world. Let us know what you think in the comments below!
